Henry Holt was born on January 3, 1840 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was educated at General Prosser’s school in New Haven before attending Yale University. Although he graduated from Columbia University School of Law in 1864, Holt was fascinated by literature and decided to enter the publishing world.
